X: American Oslo Tour

And then, at last, my remarkable American host parents, finally came to town. They are Gail and Russel from Las Vegas, with whom I lived for the high school year (at Chaparral) of 2000-01.

Mom and Dad (as I call my biological ones Mamma og Pappa) have been in Oslo before, but long before I got here. During a cruise around in the Baltic Sea, including docking in Sweden, Estonia and Poland, Oslo was given a four-hour pit-stop. They arrived early morning with a fellow couple, Russ and Carol from Houston (Texas) and the 2596 other passengers.

The express “American Oslo tour” lasted from 8:30 am to 1:30 pm. Within that time we got to see the Viking Ship museum, had a peak at the Vigeland Park, the University of Oslo, my student complex next to it, Majorstua (shopping area), Aker Brygge, Oslo City Hall, the Royal Castle, the Parliament, Oslo Cathedral, and Akershus fortress.

From Aker Brygge, my brother’s wife Ingunn Sofie, joined the crew. In between peeking at sites, we had time to chat, have a rest at a cafe, taken some photos and enjoyed one of the best sunny days in several weeks. It was great seeing my host family again for the first time in three years (visited them before visiting my brother then exchanged in Eugene, Oregon).

After the lovely Americans had to board, Ingunn Sofie and I found the most American place we could find for lunch: McDonalds :).

Så kom de endelig, mine amerikanske vertsforeldre. Gail og Russel har vært i Oslo en gang for lenge siden, men da før min tid. På et cruise i Skandinavia, Finland, noe Balkan, Russland og Polen, hadde de et ca. 4 timers stopp i Oslo ved Vippetangen (nedenfor Akershus festning). De reiste sammen med et annet par, Russ og Carol fra Houston, Texas, på båten som rommer 2600 passasjerer samt mannskap.

Mellom 8:30 og 13:30 så vi Vikingskipsmuseet, Vigelandsparken, Blindern (biblioteket og Lagskollektivet), Majorstua, Aker brygge, rådhuset, slottet, Stortinget, domkirka og Akershus festning. Fra Aker brygge ble også Ingunn Sofie med på turen.

Innimellom fikk vi snakket om løst og fast, besøkt en café, tatt noen bilder og kost oss i en av de beste soldagene Oslo har hatt på mange uker. Det var godt å se mine vertsforeldre igjen, da første gang siden jeg var innom i 2003 på vei til min bror som da var utvekslet i Eugene, Oregon.

Etter våre veier skiltes ad, dro jeg og Ingunnn Sofie på det mest amerikanske stedet vi kunne finne for lunsj; McDonalds.
